Autonomous Drilling Roadmap

The Future of Drilling, Built One Layer at a Time

From automated geometric steering today to AI-driven geologic autonomy tomorrow — every Kinetic product is a building block toward fully autonomous well placement.

That path is already underway. The foundation of the stack — a field-serviceable RSS with true proportional control, autonomous cruise modes, and dual-telemetry wireless communication — is commercial and drilling wells today. The automation above it is moving through testing and development on that same platform, so each advance arrives as an upgrade to tools already in the field, not a new system to adopt.

And because every layer stands on its own, operators don’t wait for the end state to see returns. Cruise modes reduce steering workload and human error on today’s wells; faster downhole response means smoother, flatter wellbores and better placement right now. Each run adds the field experience that trains the next level of autonomy.

Why Autonomy?

The role of directional drilling personnel is changing. Automated rigs are already operating at surface, but the downhole drilling machine remains largely manual, dependent on human interpretation, surface-to-downhole communication delays, and reactive steering adjustments.

Autonomous downhole drilling changes this equation. It improves efficiency by taking the shortest path to target. It lowers cost by reducing human intervention, response time, and crew requirements. It improves production by delivering smoother, flatter wellbores with better reservoir placement and improved fracture completions.

The enabling technologies — improvements in downhole processing, sensor capability, drilling simulation, MWD downlink, and control algorithms — are mature enough to make this possible today. Kinetic is delivering it.

Autonomy Without Dependence

Until now, the path to autonomous drilling has run exclusively through the Big 3 service companies — requiring operators to accept closed ecosystems, proprietary interfaces, and bundled service contracts as the cost of access. Kinetic exists to change that.

Every layer of the Kinetic platform — from the Kontour RSS to DrillComm wireless to the automation layers in development — is designed for universal compatibility and operator independence. Drillers and operators can pursue fully autonomous well placement with their own MWD, their own motor, their own crews, and their own operational preferences. No vendor lock-in. No single-source dependency.

This isn’t just a technology difference — it’s a business model difference. Kinetic gives the industry an open path to autonomous drilling that doesn’t require surrendering operational control to a service company.

The Kinetic Roadmap

A Layered Architecture for Autonomous Operations

Every product Kinetic builds is designed to stack into a unified architecture — each layer enabling the next.

LAYER 1
Reliable, Economical RSS with Proportional Steering & High Dogleg
DELIVERED

Kontour provides the mechanical foundation: a low-cost, high-performance RSS with true proportional control, field serviceability, and no operational restrictions.

LAYER 2
K-PIVOT BHA STABILIZER, DRILLCOMM, CRUISE CONTROL, AND DUAL-TELEMETRY MWD LINK

DELIVERED

Autonomous cruise modes (inclination hold, azimuth hold, vertical control) and DrillComm’s dual-mode wireless communication create the foundation for closed-loop downhole control.

LAYER 3
DrillComm™ Universal MWD Link

DELIVERED

DrillComm’s universal compatibility means the automated steering system works with any operator’s MWD — the network isn’t limited to a single vendor’s ecosystem.

LAYER 4
Downhole Automated Geometric Steering

IN TESTING

The Kontour uses onboard sensors — inertial guidance for wellbore trajectory, drilling mechanics for optimization, combined with downlinked target coordinates to autonomously steer along a planned well path.

This is “coordinate steering” — the fastest and most accurate geometric steering protocol available.

LAYER 5
Automated LWD Geological Steering & Downhole Survey Management

IN DEVELOPMENT

The Kontour uses onboard sensors and Kontour-enabled LWD sensors — inertial guidance for wellbore trajectory and drilling mechanics for optimization — combined with downlinked target coordinates to autonomously steer along a geologic marker.

This is automated geosteering — placement of your well in the productive zone.

END STATE
Man-Less Directional Drilling — On Your Terms

A fully autonomous downhole drilling machine that pairs with automated surface rigs to deliver closed-loop well placement — from spud to TD — with minimal human intervention. And unlike any Big 3 alternative, operators retain full control: choose your MWD, choose your directional company, and run autonomous wells without single-vendor dependence, while placing wells with less risk, less cost and more production..
