Solutions for Complex Well Geometry
Precision Through the Hardest Trajectories
Tight curves, full vertical-curve-lateral profiles, long laterals, and narrow anti-collision windows demand continuous, proportional control — not the on/off cycling of conventional steering.
Kontour delivers true proportional dogleg from 0° to 17°/100 ft with 2° toolface resolution, drilling the whole well in a single run.
One Tool, Any Well Path
Every Section, a Single Run
Complex trajectories punish tools that steer in discrete bursts. On/off hydraulic cycling produces rippled, tortuous curves; single-purpose BHAs force trips between sections; long laterals starve the BHA of real-time feedback; and congested pads leave no margin for steering error. Kontour was built for continuous, proportional control of both dogleg and toolface — combined with the DrillComm Network’s real-time near-bit data and K-Pivot stability — so one BHA drills vertical, curve, and lateral smoothly, in a single run.
High-Dogleg Wells
THE CHALLENGE
Building tight curves is where on/off steering shows its limits. Cycling between steering and non-steering states overcorrects and undercorrects, producing a rippled, tortuous curve that increases torque and drag and complicates everything that follows — casing, completions, and production.
Hitting a high build rate at all often means de-rating other parameters to give the tool a chance to keep up.
Kinetic's Solution
Kontour delivers true proportional dogleg control, continuously variable from 0° through 17°/100 ft with 2° toolface resolution. Instead of cycling on and off, it holds a precise, continuously commanded deflection — building exactly the curve the plan calls for, smoothly. High build rates are achieved without de-rating RPM, flow, WOB, or LCM.
Key Outcomes:
- True proportional dogleg, 0–17°/100 ft, continuously variable
- 2° toolface resolution for precise curve control
- Smooth high-DLS curves — not on/off ripple
- High build rates with no parameter de-rating
One-Run Vertical / Curve / Lateral Wells
THE CHALLENGE
Drilling a full V/C/L profile traditionally means multiple BHAs and multiple trips — a vertical assembly, a build assembly, a lateral assembly — each trip adding hours of flat time, connection risk, and cost.
The more sections, the more trips, the higher the cost-per-foot.
Kinetic's Solution
Kontour drills vertical, tangent, curve, and lateral sections in a single BHA run. Its proportional steering spans the full range of build and hold the well plan requires, while a tapered body with sculpted housing increases flow-by area for clean trip-ability — proven smooth on elevators with no back-reaming required. One BHA, one run, the whole well path.
Key Outcomes:
- Single-BHA vertical / curve / lateral capability
- Eliminates trips between well sections
- Smooth trip-ability — no back-reaming required
- Field-proven: 14,309 ft and a full V/T/C/L profile in one DJ Basin program
Extended-Reach & Long-Lateral Wells
THE CHALLENGE
As laterals lengthen, torque and drag accumulate, vibration builds, and the BHA gets harder to control — while real-time information from the bit becomes scarcer.
Toolface control degrades, weight transfer to the bit suffers, and small steering errors compound over thousands of feet.
Kinetic's Solution
Kontour pairs precise proportional steering with the DrillComm Network’s 200+ ft two-way wireless link — the longest short-hop in the industry — delivering real-time near-bit inclination and azimuth (sensors 7 ft from the bit) so steering decisions are made on current data, not stale surveys.
K-Pivot improves weight-on-bit transfer and dampens vibration through the lateral, and the smoother wellbore Kontour produces reduces torque and drag over the full reach.
Key Outcomes:
- Real-time near-bit inclination/azimuth via 200+ ft DrillComm link
- Better WOB transfer and vibration control with K-Pivot
- Smoother wellbore reduces cumulative torque and drag
- Sustained directional control deep into long laterals
Congested-Pad & Anti-Collision Wells
THE CHALLENGE
Multi-well pads stack wellbores close together, with the highest collision risk at shallow kickoffs where wells are still bunched.
Precise low-angle azimuthal control and trustworthy near-bit surveys are essential — exactly the regime where many steering tools are least precise.
Kinetic's Solution
Kontour has proven low-angle azimuthal control for well-collision avoidance, with proportional toolface precision and near-bit inclination and azimuth measured 7 ft from the bit and transmitted in real time over DrillComm.
You steer tight separation windows with continuous control on current survey data, not coarse corrections on delayed information.
Key Outcomes:
- Proven low-angle azimuthal control for collision avoidance
- Near-bit inclination/azimuth 7 ft from bit, transmitted in real time
- Proportional precision for tight separation windows
- Confident kickoffs on crowded multi-well pads
