Solutions for Extreme Drilling Environments
Built for Wells That Break Conventional Tools
Heat and pressure are where most rotary steerable systems start to fail — seals harden, electronics drift, and reliability falls off a cliff. The Kontour Automated Steering System was engineered from the metal up for the downhole extremes: an all-metal, mud-cooled drivetrain rated to 350°F (175°C), with a design that generates almost no heat of its own.
Where Heat and Pressure Meet Reliability
Rated for Heat, Built for Depth
Conventional RSS designs rely on fast-cycling hydraulic actuation, high-duty-cycle seals, and densely packed electronics — all of which degrade as temperature and pressure climb. The result is a narrowing operating window: shorter tool life, more failures, and de-rated performance exactly when the well demands the most.
Kontour takes the opposite approach. Ultra-slow electromechanical actuation — roughly one housing revolution per hour — generates almost no internal friction, heat, or wear, while all-metal mud-lubricated and mud-cooled bearings use the flowstream itself as a heat sink. Fewer than 300 discrete components means fewer things to fail in the heat. The electronics are held to the same standard: high-temperature-rated components on rig-serviceable boards, designed to operate at 350°F (175°C).
High-Temperature Wells
THE CHALLENGE
As bottom-hole temperatures rise toward and beyond 150°C, conventional RSS platforms suffer. Elastomer seals harden and fail, electronics drift out of calibration, and the fast-cycling hydraulic mechanisms that steer the bit generate their own friction and heat — accelerating wear precisely when cooling is hardest.
Operators are forced to pull tools early, accept shortened runs, or de-rate the program to protect the BHA.
Kinetic's Solution
The Kontour is rated to 350°F (175°C) and was designed for high-temperature service from first principles. Its ultra-slow rotating and reciprocating seals generate no appreciable friction, heat, or wear. All-metal, mud-lubricated and mud-cooled bearings dissipate heat into the flowstream and are field-changeable without specialized facilities.
High-temperature brushless DC motors drive the steering mechanism with minimal thermal load. The result is consistent steering performance and reliable tool life in thermal environments that shorten the life of hydraulic RSS platforms.
Key Outcomes:
- 350°F (175°C) operating rating across the full steering envelope
- All-metal, mud-cooled bearings — the flowstream is the heat sink
- No appreciable internal friction or heat from ultra-slow actuation
- Field-changeable bearings — no clean-room rebuild after a hot run
High-Pressure & Deep Wells
THE CHALLENGE
Deep and overpressured wells subject the BHA to extreme hydrostatic and differential pressure. Tools with intricate hydraulic flow paths, dynamic seals, and pressure-sensitive actuation present more potential leak and failure points the deeper they run.
Fast-rotating seals are a particular weak point: surface speed at the seal face generates its own frictional heat, and elastomers that are already softened by formation temperature wear and extrude faster under high differential pressure — so the seal degrades quickest exactly where a failure costs the most. And a failure at depth is among the most expensive forms of non-productive time in the entire well.
Kinetic's Solution
Kontour’s mechanical simplicity is its pressure advantage. With fewer than 300 components, no high-duty-cycle hydraulic actuation, and steering force that does not depend on mud back-pressure, the tool removes the most pressure-sensitive failure modes by design — keeping reliability high in the deepest, highest-cost intervals.
Key Outcomes:
- Mechanically simple drivetrain — fewer pressure-sensitive failure points
- Steering force independent of mud back-pressure
- Built for reliable performance in deep, high-cost intervals
